Temporary Fishery Biologists (GS-9) – up to 2 positions in Eldorado National Forest

The Eldorado National Forest is performing outreach for hiring up to two GS-9 temporary seasonal fishery biologists.   The duty station will be located in Placerville, CA.  Work is located on the Eldorado National Forest, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe; general location of the work will be between Hwy 80 and Hwy 88.

Government housing will likely not be available.


  • Participate in interdisciplinary teams for fuels project and recreation-related projects for biological input and to provide biological evaluations and assessments of aquatic species.

  • Leading a field crew to conduct California red-legged frog surveys, Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog and foothill yellow-legged frog surveys.

  • Leading a field crew to conduct stream habitat surveys, including water temperature monitoring, surveys in range allotments, fuels projects, and for watershed restoration, etc.

  • Leading a field crew to conduct high mountain lakes trout removal by gillnetting.

  • GIS mapping and computer data input.  Report writing of survey results and analysis.

Work involves driving long distances to field sites in a Forest Service vehicle. Expect to conduct field surveys under arduous weather and terrain, walk long distances in streams, wade thru ponds and lakes, hike to remote wilderness areas, carry loads exceeding 25 pounds, and camp overnight.  Gill-netting high mountain lakes will require the use of float tubes. Work also involves sitting at a computer in the office for many consecutive days writing documents and inputting data into GIS.
