April 27, 2013: Frog Pond Building

On Save The Frogs Day 2013, members of SAVE THE FROGS! UWSP, The Society for Ecological Restoration, and even some members of the society came out and helped us build a frog pond outside of the Visitor's Center in Schmeeckle Reserve. Starting with just a field of invasive quack grass, we dug a pond, lined it with environmentally safe clay, planted some native aquatic plants to give frogs cover, and filled it with water. Just a few months later, and we are already seeing frogs utilizing our pond.

April 10, 2013: Allison Argo Film Event

On April 10th, 2013, SAVE THE FROGS! UWSP hosted an event that brought Emmy winning documentary filmmaker Allison Argo to campus. The event started with film clips from two of Argo's films – "Frogs: The Thin Green Line" and "The Last Frog". We then had a panel consisting of Argo, current UWSP Herpetologist Dr. Pete Zani, former UWSP Herpetologist Dr. Erik Wild, and UWSP Graduate Student Jonathan Stoffergen. Students and community members of all ages were able to ask the panel questions as well as provide their own input. We reached out to other UWSP student organizations and received financial/promotional assistance from the Herpetology Society, Women in Natural Resources, and the Biological Honors Society.

Save The Frogs Day WIFor our Save The Frogs Day event this year we hosted a Benefit Concert on our campus. We had two local bands, Paradigm Blue and Heavycritters, play for us. Also, our members gave a presentation about our organization as well as the issues of atrazine and amphibians. In addition, we had a volunteer-based amphibian trivia contest! Aside from the entertainment, there was a silent auction, face painting, informational tables, SAVE THE FROGS! merchandise for sale and free food and drinks! It was a huge success and we were able to raise over $200.00!

> The Save The Frogs! UWSP Chapter is putting on a Save The Frogs Day benefit concert to help raise money for frog conservation efforts! Our Save The Frogs Day Benefit Concert is on Friday, April 12 from 5:30PM – 10:00PM in the Encore (DUC). We will have local bands (The Hi Matics, Paradigm Blue, and Heavycritters), food, drinks, educational material, activities and more. Our event is free to students and is a great way to spend the night, hang out with friends, and learn more about amphibians and how you can help the cause! There will be food and beverages provided, fun games and learning activites, a silent auction, and of course live music! Also, expect to learn lots from our informational speaker! Please come join us for some fun and help us raise awareness about frog conservation! Our event is open to the general public; free for UWSP students and $5 for non-students. Kids under 10 are free! Chapter Goals

Protect the UWSP campus' amphibian populations

More coming soon!

Educate fellow UWSP students about amphibians

If people don't know a problem exists, it is incredibly difficult to fix the problem. UWSP Chapter members will educate their fellow students about the campus' amphibian populations and the overall importance of amphibians. Activities include:

(1) Creating educational signs to be placed near sidewalks and roads that pass by the campus' wetlands. Signs will inform passersby about the frogs that live in that wetland.

(2) Leading field trips to look for frogs each semester, and organizing presentations by guest speakers on topics related to environmental conservation.

(3) Promoting SAVE THE FROGS! activities to the students and professors of the different faculties and involving them in relevant programs: artists in the SAVE THE FROGS! Art Contest; writers in the Poetry Contest; musicians playing benefit concerts for SAVE THE FROGS!; etc...

Hold an Annual Save The Frogs Day event on campus

Save The Frogs Day 2012Save The Frogs Day is the single best time of year to raise awareness and funds for amphibian conservation, and is the easiest time to get people actively involved saving frogs. The UWSP chapter of SAVE THE FROGS! will organize a Save The Frogs Day event on campus each year to highlight problems frogs face and raise money for the Chapter's activities. Save The Frogs Day receives worldwide publicity and thus is an excellent time to bring attention to the threats to Wisconsin's frog populations. Save The Frogs Day occurs annually towards the end of April.

Educate students in Wisconsin schools

Undergraduates will give presentations on frog conservation to local elementary, middle and high schools students to help ensure the students grow up with respect and appreciation for their natural heritage, and to ensure that there is a large future pool of environmental conservationists. UWSP students should help the schools set up their own chapters, which can be supervised by the UWSP student.
