Introduction
On March 21st, 2021, SAVE THE FROGS! along with 31 other groups submitted the letter below to Senator Henry Stern (Chair of the California Senate’s Committee on Natural Resources and Water), stating our full support for California bill SB 799 to permanently preserve Tesla Park.
Tesla Park is in southeastern Alameda County, California and is rich in special status amphibian species:
- California red legged frogs (Rana draytonii)
- California tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum)
- Foothill yellow legged frogs (Rana boylii)
- Spadefoot toads Spea hammondii)
Tesla is also home to more common species, such as California newts (Taricha torosa) and Pacific chorus frogs (Pseudacris regilla).
Unfortunately, Tesla Park remains under threat from the California State Parks’ Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation division (CA OHMVR), which has plans to open the land to off-highway vehicles. Such usage would inevitably destroy the habitat, foul the rivers and result in direct and indirect harm to Tesla Park’s resident amphibians.
