In a major victory for amphibians and conservationists, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) designated nearly 3,000 square miles in the Sierra Nevada mountains as critical habitat for three endangered amphibians: the mountain yellow-legged frog (Rana muscosa), the Sierra Madre yellow-legged frog (Rana sierrae), and the Yosemite toad (Anaxyrus canorus). These species, once abundant in California’s high-altitude ecosystems, have faced dramatic declines due to habitat destruction, pesticide contamination, infectious diseases such as chytridiomycosis, and predation by invasive trout species introduced for recreational fishing.
This decision is a significant step forward in amphibian conservation, as critical habitat designations help safeguard essential ecosystems by restricting harmful activities and prioritizing restoration efforts. The designation ensures that federal agencies will consider the impact of their actions on these species when approving land use projects, such as logging, development, and livestock grazing. Protecting this vast stretch of land—covering portions of 16 counties—will improve breeding and foraging conditions, ultimately increasing the chances of recovery for these imperiled amphibians.
The announcement follows years of advocacy from conservation groups, scientists, and amphibian enthusiasts, including SAVE THE FROGS! supporters who submitted letters urging the USFWS to protect these species and their habitats. Public participation played a key role in demonstrating the widespread support for amphibian conservation and ensuring that these frogs and toads receive the protection they need.
While this designation is a huge win, continued vigilance is necessary to ensure effective implementation and enforcement of conservation measures. SAVE THE FROGS! remains committed to protecting amphibians in California and beyond, and we encourage everyone to stay engaged in efforts to safeguard these extraordinary species. Thank you to all who contributed to this success—your voices made a difference!
