Guidelines for Effective Signs

The “Seven Year Rule”: Before finalizing your sign, ask yourself: Would I feel comfortable discussing this topic with my seven-year-old grandchild? If the answer is no, your sign is likely not family-friendly and you should consider another slogan.

The “Neighbor Test”: Ask yourself: Would my neighbor who watches different news networks understand this sign and find it reasonable? If your message is so niche, partisan, or inflammatory that it would confuse or offend someone outside your specific political bubble, it’s not right for this event.

Our goal is to expand the coalition of people who care about frogs and democracy – not to alienate potential supporters with divisive messaging.

What to Avoid

Off-Topic or Controversial Messages

During the inaugural Million Frog March in November 2025, individuals who were not part of our organized event joined the gathering with signs containing offensive and controversial language unrelated to our mission. While we cannot control what happens in public spaces like the National Mall, these messages do not represent SAVE THE FROGS! or the values of the Million Frog March.

Such signage confuses passersby about our purpose, distracts from our core message, and can alienate people who might otherwise support amphibian conservation and environmental protection.

For future events, dedicated volunteers will politely encourage individuals with off-topic or inflammatory signage to either put their signs away while participating or to demonstrate separately from our gathering.

Examples of What NOT to Include:

  • Personal attacks on specific politicians or public figures – They’d probably enjoy the free publicity anyway! Instead, focus on defending democratic principles and environmental protections.
  • Profanity or crude language
  • Messages unrelated to frogs, environment, or democracy
  • Highly partisan slogans that alienate potential supporters
  • Inside jokes or references that most people won’t understand
  • Violent imagery or threatening language

Remember: We’re here to invite people in, not push them away. Our message is powerful because it connects universal values – love of nature, respect for democracy – in a positive, actionable way.

Tips for Creating Great Signs

Make It Readable

  • Use large, bold letters that can be read from a distance
  • Dark text on light backgrounds (or vice versa) works best
  • Keep your message short – aim for 5-7 words maximum

Make It Durable

  • Use sturdy materials like posterboard or cardboard
  • Consider laminating your sign or covering it with clear packing tape to protect against rain
  • Attach your sign securely to a stick or pole for easy carrying

Make It Creative

  • Add frog illustrations or stickers
  • Use bright colors to stand out
  • Consider double-sided signs so your message is visible from multiple angles

Include Our Website

Adding savethefrogs.com to your sign helps curious onlookers learn more about our work and get involved in amphibian conservation.

Questions?

If you’re unsure whether your sign idea is appropriate for the Million Frog March, ask yourself:

  1. Does it relate to frogs, environmental protection, or democracy?
  2. Would I feel comfortable discussing this topic with my seven-year-old grandchild?
  3. Would it welcome rather than alienate potential supporters?
  4. Is it positive and solution-oriented?
  5. Does it focus on principles rather than attacking specific people?

When in doubt, choose one of our suggested slogans – they’ve been crafted to effectively communicate our message while keeping the event welcoming to all.

See you at the march – sign in hand! 🐸
