SAVE THE FROGS! South Asia Meetup: Presentation by Dr. KV Gururaja
Amphibian Conservation in India’s Western Ghats
In this session, Dr. Gururaja K V, an expert on Indian amphibians, provides a comprehensive overview of global and Indian amphibian conservation statuses, highlighting the threats faced by 41% of known amphibian species globally and 31% of 426 assessed species in India. Dr. Gururaja also shares the inspiring story of the Malabar Tree Toad’s rediscovery and how citizen science initiatives have helped map its distribution, leading to a status change from “Endangered” to “Least Concern.”
Dr. Gururaja discusses the successful Mapping Malabar Toad initiative, which engaged local communities in conservation efforts and other projects like frog gardens and a state-level frog festival in Karnataka. This session emphasizes the importance of community involvement in amphibian conservation. As we conclude, the organizers express their gratitude and announce the next South Asia Meetup in August, inviting continued participation and engagement.

SAVE THE FROGS! South Asia Meetup: Presentation by Hassan Al-Razi
The Story Of A Decade Of Amphibian Research And Conservation
Amphibian biologist Hassan Al-Razi Chayan presents the story of his amphibian research and conservation; shares his experiences; problems he faced to conduct the research and how he overcame all of those.
Hassan Al-Razi is a prominent wildlife biologist from Bangladesh. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Jagannath University in 2015, and his Master of Science degree in Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation from the same university in 2017. He is currently a PhD student at the School of Human Science, University of Western Australia, where he is studying the behavioral ecology of primates. From 2012 to 2021, he focused on amphibia research and conservation in addition to his primate research and conservation work. Consequently, he described three new frog species from Bangladesh using morphological and molecular approaches. Since 2013, he has been involved with SAVE THE FROGS. In 2013 and 2015, he arranged Save The Frogs Day events in Bangladesh.

Hi Kerry, I enjoy these zoom sessions in that I am learning more about what the effects of climate change are having on the amphibian populations worldwide. As a meteorologist, I am up to date on what is happening worldwide in the climate arena. The biggest manifestations now seem to extreme heat and catastrophic rain events. Look at the big rain events of the past month in Houston, TX, as well as around the world in Africa, the Middle East, South America and parts of China. These events have got to affect local amphibian populations in wiping out them and their habitats. Unfortunately more is to come. These zoom events are extremely valuable.”
