Introduction
On May 27, 2024, the Department of Zoology at the University of Dhaka hosted a vibrant celebration of the 16th Annual Save The Frogs Day, bringing together students, faculty, and conservationists to raise awareness about amphibians and their vital role in ecosystems. Organized in partnership with SAVE THE FROGS, the Dhaka University Nature Conservation Club (DUNCC), and the Zoological Society of Bangladesh, the event featured expert talks, creative competitions, and awards.
Special guests included Professor Dr. Hamida Khanam, President of the Bangladesh Zoological Society, and Professor Dr. Md. Niamul Naser, Convener of DUNCC. A keynote address on frog conservation was delivered by Professor Dr. Mohammad Firoz Jaman, and the event was chaired by Professor Dr. Shefali Begum, Chair of the Department of Zoology.
Students from multiple universities participated in competitions including frog photography, poster-making, frog identification quizzes, frog call imitation, and a special “Messenger of Nature” award recognizing wildlife journalism. The event also received local media coverage:
This event was supported by a $350 Save The Frogs Day Grant and stands as an excellent example of grassroots amphibian education and community engagement in Bangladesh.
