Bijay Basfore – India
Department of Zoology, Cotton University, Guwahati, Assam. Ph.D. Candidate
Scholarship Award: $4,195
Travel Grant: $505
My Ph.D. research focuses on assessing the role of geographical barriers in dispersion patterns and their impact on genetic divergence in some anuran species. This ecotour represents an invaluable opportunity for me, as it will not only broaden my understanding of amphibians but also provide me with firsthand exposure to field research and species conservation efforts. The knowledge and experience I will gain from this tour will be directly relevant to my studies and will undoubtedly contribute to the success of my research.
I sincerely believe that participating in this ecotour will enhance my understanding of key ecological principles, help me build essential research skills, and deepen my awareness of conservation practices-all of which are integral to my current work. It will also allow me to connect with experts and peers in the field, fostering collaborations that could be beneficial for my research.
Furthermore, I have previously served as a guest lecturer at two different institutes, and the knowledge I gain from this ecotour will be passed on to students through my teaching. I am deeply committed to sharing what I learn with future generations of students, particularly about amphibian conservation and ecology. Additionally, I will be able to raise awareness of your organization through word-of-mouth, thereby amplifying your mission and reach.
I would like to seek your assistance in covering the cost of the upcoming ecotour. As a research scholar, I am currently unable to afford this trip on my own, particularly as I do not receive a fellowship from my institute.
“I am very grateful to you and the organization for giving me this opportunity. Thank you very much!”

Vijay Kartick – India
Nature Conservation Foundation, India
Scholarship Award: $5,000
Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF) is a leading non-profit conservation organisation in India that was established in 1996. The organisation, committed to protecting India’s natural heritage, is at the forefront of nature conservation through its scientific research and conservation initiatives that involve active community engagement and partnerships from multiple stakeholders. Using an interdisciplinary approach in wildlife ecology and conservation, NCF works on multiple species-based and habitat-based projects that are spread across the biogeographic zones of India: from the rainforests of Western Ghats to the high altitudes of trans- Himalayan region.
As a PhD student (Manipal University) from India working in the Western Ghats, I am investigating the impacts of land-use change on frogs using community ecology tools and bioacoustics. This ecotour presents a unique opportunity for me to explore a system like Borneo, which shares ecological similarities with the Western Ghats but also presents distinct differences. Experiencing these differences first hand will allow me to broaden my understanding of amphibian ecology and conservation in varied landscapes.
Additionally, with my knowledge of amphibian ecology and bioacoustics monitoring in the Western Ghats, I can contribute meaningful insights and comparative perspectives that could benefit the group and the broader amphibian conservation discussion. Along with this I would like to volunteer in organising this ecotour. I’m also interested in photography and can help the organising team with it as well.
I would like to take care of my airfare charges and accommodation prior to the ecotour, and seek only financial assistance for the tour itself.

Scholarship Award: $5,000
I have been a passionate supporter of STF! as well as previously participating in your ecotours to Belize, Ecuador, and Costa Rica! The 2013 SAVE THE FROGS! Belize Ecotour with my daughter, changed my life!! It spurred the decision to relocate back to Zambia where I grew up, to live amongst the wildlife and reduce human-wildlife conflict to encourage conservation. I have never been to Malaysia/Borneo side of the world and this would be the opportunity of a lifetime for me! Besides frogs, I am also very interested in the other fauna as well as culture of the people there.
Frog knowledge and conservation has been a passion since childhood. Hence my years on the STF! Board of Directors and continued promotion of STF! in Zambia.

Jeremy Loh – Malaysia
FACULTY OF TROPICAL FORESTRY, UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA SABAH
Scholarship Award: $5,000
I would like to attend as I have always dreamt of not only being a part of a trip like this, but also to learn about the ins-and-outs of herpetofauna tourism and how I can make it a career! And as a local to the expedition area, it would also allow me more insight and help me gain knowledge about local frog species and how to introduce them to the general public!
I am a second-year student taking a Bachelor in Science with Honours in International Tropical Forestry at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. I have shared great interest in herpetofauna species since young, but I only started taking the passion more seriously for the past three years. I have interned for a local environmental organisation called Hutan Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Programme, located in the Kinabatangan area of Sabah, as well as done multiple volunteering programs at various universities.
I hope to not only gain knowledge on the Anura order, but also how to conserve and protect them. I wish to open my eyes more to the amphibian conservation world, and make connections by meeting new people in this field as well. In turn, I also hope to contribute by providing insight into the local amphibian scene by communicating and sharing photographs and experiences from here in Borneo.
I am a local Malaysian student based in Kota Kinabalu. I only require basic sponsoring such as transport to/from Ranau district, accommodation, park entrance tickets/permits, and food.
I have already used quite a large sum of money on other physical resources that help me in my understanding of local wildlife such as a number of guide books and equipment like a camera and various lenses. This scholarship would immensely contribute to my knowledge without making me break the bank.

As amphibians are amazing creatures and they always attract me. I want to attend for the unique wildlife experience mainly frogs. It has different frogs in Malaysia than Nepal. This tour will also help me to explore the natural habitats of that area which will add a new knowledge in my mind. There will be chances of networking with other people who will be joining the tour and there will be good interaction with the tour guide as well. Wherever I go I want to learn, conserve and share my knowledge on frogs. I can easily share a room with others. Also, I can take photographs and shoot a short documentary of the tour for your organization if you provide me this aid support.

Scholarship Award: $4,195
Travel Grant: $980
I’m very much interested in this ecotour and I had already mailed for financial assistance on 7th July, 2024 when I came to know about this. I should be considered for financial assistance for the Peninsular Malaysia Ecotour because I am deeply committed to amphibian conservation. My research on habitat connectivity of two endemic frogs from the Himalayan region, during which I surveyed over 60 streams, demonstrates my dedication to understanding and conserving these species. Presenting my findings at the 42nd Pakistani Congress of Zoology (International), where I earned third place, reinforced the significance of my work for amphibian conservation. My research has been presented by a colleague in 10th World Congress of Herpetology 2024 and is currently under review in “Amphibian and Reptile Conservation”.
In addition, as a part of under-represented group (women) I actively volunteer at the Herpetology Lab at PMAS Arid Agriculture University under supervision of Dr. Muhammad Rais, where our focus is on conserving amphibians species. I have my own scooter, which I use to travel to the field for frog surveys as well. I’m also a member of SAVE THE FROGS! and have contributed to organizing Save The Frogs Day in Pakistan, further highlighting my commitment to raising awareness.
Being part of the Green Mavericks project allowed me to explore the intersection of biodiversity and climate change. As one of the selected few from Pakistan, I’ve shown a strong commitment to environmental advocacy to make world a better place for biodiversity to thrive in.
Unfortunately, I lack the financial resources to cover the cost of this ecotour, but I am eager to learn and bring back valuable insights to my work in Pakistan. This opportunity will greatly enhance my conservation efforts for amphibians, and help me advocate for their conservation.
I am passionate about amphibian conservation and have hands-on experience through extensive fieldwork, volunteer efforts, and research. As a member of underrepresented groups in conservation, I am committed to making a positive impact on threatened species and raising awareness in Pakistan. Financial support for this ecotour will allow me to expand my conservation efforts and apply valuable knowledge to my work.

My burning passion for amphibian conservation is infinite. This ecotour will provide me an exposure to see and work with fellow frog conservationist and increase my network as a budding frog biologist. Apart from this, it will be a great pleasure to see the frogs in Borneo as this will be a once in a lifetime opportunity. However, as a student my budget is very limited and I come from a developing country (Philippines). Joining ecotours are very close to impossible, so I’m very happy to have seen the opportunity to join and hopefully be one of those who will be granted this opportunity. This ecotour will ignite future collaborations on amphibian conservation, so thank you very much for this opportunity.
