You’re invited to join SAVE THE FROGS Gainesville as we host Save The Frogs Day, which will take place at the Ashton Biological Preserve in northern Florida on April 29th, 2017!
Florida has an incredible array of biodiversity, landscapes and ecosystems, and is home to about 57 known amphibian species, making it a perfect place to hold a Save The Frogs Day event. We will have an abundance of opportunities to find and photograph amphibians as we explore beautiful palm savannas, wetlands and pine forests. We hope you will join us and celebrate amphibians on this amazing day!
What is Save The Frogs Day?
Conceived and coordinated by SAVE THE FROGS!, Save The Frogs Day is the world’s largest day of amphibian education and conservation action.
Save The Frogs Day at Ashton Biological Preserve is an opportunity for you to meet with other local frog-lovers! You will learn about amphibian ecology, observe native amphibian species and become inspired to save the frogs! At the end of the event, we will take a short field trip to see frogs in their native habitat. Thank you for joining us!
Why Ashton Biological Preserve?
It’s a great place to find frogs! The Preserve’s low areas contain wetlands and sinkholes, and a variety of springs are found in the region due to the presence of the Floridian aquifer running beneath the Brooksville Ridge. Ashton Biological Preserve has permanent and ephemeral water sources on property and is home to breeding populations of gopher frogs (Lithobates capito), Eastern narrowmouth toads (Gastrophryne carolinensis), and pinewoods treefrogs (Hyla femoralis), as well as many other amphibian species.
What should I bring to Save The Frogs Day?
Some snacks and drinks will be provided but we urge everyone to bring a dish as this is a potluck event. Yum!
What should I wear on Save The Frogs Day?
Long-sleeved shirts and trousers are best as it may be a little buggy. Please wear close-toed shoes.

Due to the location of the preserve and for liabilty reasons, we unfortunately can’t welcome children to the event. We are so sorry!
How do I get to the Preserve?
Ashton Biological Preserve is about 20 miles outside of Gainesville, FL. The road to Ashton from the main highway is dirt, so it takes about 45 minutes to reach the Preserve. It is advisable to use a vehicle with high-clearance, but if you get stuck… we will pull you out! Also, help the envrionment and carpool with a few friends!
