Save The Frogs Day 2025 in Bukavu, Congo DRC
In commemoration of Save The Frogs Day 2025, Our Health Organization, with the support of SAVE THE FROGS!, successfully organized a two-part awareness event in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, targeting both academic circles and local farming communities. The activities were held in South Kivu Province, where amphibian populations face increasing threats from unsustainable farming practices and environmental degradation.
In total, 102 people were directly reached through these two events. Indirectly, over 9,000 individuals were engaged through our social media platforms, three published press articles, a local newspaper report, and a radio broadcast program covering the event. This extended outreach helped amplify awareness beyond the event venues.
The activities not only sparked increased awareness among farmers and students, but also laid the groundwork for future amphibian conservation projects that center around community engagement and eco-friendly practices. These events were supported by a $350 Save The Frogs Day Grant.
Special thanks to the event organizer Jacques Assumani and key volunteers Daniel Cirimwami, Gloire Busira, Jordan Ramazani, Amos Migabo, Jeanne d’Arc Macumu.

Field Event
The first activity, a community sensitization session, took place on April 26, 2025, in Mbobero village, located on the outskirts of Bukavu. It brought together 29 participants, including swamp farmers, environmental activists, and local youth. The session focused on the alarming disappearance of frog populations in the region—a phenomenon that many local farmers acknowledged without fully understanding the underlying causes. Through participatory dialogue and technical explanations, the farmers learned about the harmful impacts of chemical pesticide use on amphibians and broader biodiversity. The training emphasized sustainable agricultural practices, the ecological role of frogs, and their importance as natural pest regulators and indicators of ecosystem health.

Scientific Conference
The second activity, a scientific conference, was held on April 29, 2025, at the Institut Supérieur de Développement Rural (ISDR) Bukavu, specifically within its Department of Environment and Sustainable Development. The conference attracted 73 attendees, including students, university lecturers, researchers, and civil society members. A guest researcher specializing in herpetology presented on the ecological, medical, and cultural significance of frogs, highlighting conservation strategies and the innovative approaches needed to safeguard them. Jacques Assumani, from Our Health Organization, gave an overview of SAVE THE FROGS!’s global mission and ongoing conservation efforts. The event concluded with a dynamic Q&A session using Mentimeter, fostering interaction with the audience and professional engagement. Several lecturers expressed their intent to further document local amphibians and promote frog conservation in academic curricula.

“Dear Kerry, I hope this message finds you in excellent health and high spirits. Allow me to sincerely thank you for the incredible work you continue to do in the service of amphibian conservation around the world. I am particularly grateful for the opportunity you gave us to join the global celebration of the 17th Annual Save The Frogs Day. It was a privilege for our team in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to be part of this important movement, and we truly look forward to contributing even more meaningfully to the 18th edition—if not to other collaborative projects even before then! Thank you again for your continuous support and for trusting us to carry this mission forward. Warm regards, Jacques Assumani”
