Community-Led Conservation for the Taita Hills Warty Frog: Lessons from Kenya’s Largest Save The Frogs Day Event
On April 28th, 2026, Naturehub Collective Community Organisation hosted Kenya’s largest ever Save The Frogs Day event in Wundanyi, Taita Hills, bringing together 150 community members, traditional elders, and students to protect the Critically Endangered Taita Hills Warty Frog (Callulina dawida) — a species surviving in only 4.3 km² of severely fragmented cloud forest.
This presentation shares the story of how a community-led conservation model transformed local attitudes toward forest protection, trained 30 citizen scientists in standardized monitoring protocols, and planted 500 indigenous trees at critical breeding sites — achieving 95% seedling survival. Drawing on eight years of conservation experience across Kenya’s five most biodiverse landscapes, I will share practical lessons on how event-based funding like the SAVE THE FROGS! Save The Frogs Day Grant can strategically amplify longer-term conservation programs, and how traditional ecological knowledge from Taita community elders strengthened both the science and the community ownership of conservation outcomes.
Attendees will leave with a replicable model for community-led endangered amphibian conservation that integrates citizen science, habitat restoration, and intergenerational knowledge transfer — applicable across Africa’s biodiversity hotspots and beyond.

June 18th, 2024 Save The Frogs Day Meetups
Led by SAVE THE FROGS! founder Dr. Kerry Kriger, this session marked the beginning of our monthly meetings, designed to help amphibian enthusiasts prepare for the 17th Annual Save The Frogs Day on April 28, 2025.
These sessions, occurring every third Tuesday through May 2025, aim to ensure well-planned, impactful events with plenty of time for refinement and addressing potential challenges. Dr. Kriger emphasized the importance of early planning to prevent last-minute surprises and increase the success and educational value of the events.
During this session, we reviewed the 2024 Save The Frogs Day events, with Dani from SAVE THE FROGS! Ecuador sharing insights from her successful event in Tena, which saw over 125 participants. Dani highlighted the importance of having a reliable team of volunteers and detailed the various activities and workshops held.
The session also covered practical tips for event planning, including using tools like Canva for creating promotional materials and ensuring effective communication with volunteers and attendees. We created a Save The Frogs Day 2025 promo graphic and updated the website with a page about the Ecuador events.
Join us monthly to share experiences, gain advice, and collaborate with fellow amphibian enthusiasts. Together, let’s make the next Save The Frogs Day the best one yet!
