Save The Frogs Day 2025 in Kolkata: Amphibian Awareness And Film Screening At The Heritage School
SAVE THE FROGS! India is pleased to be spreading amphibian awareness throughout Kolkata and West Bengal. We celebrated the 17th Annual Save The Frogs Day with enthusiasm and purpose at The Heritage School, Kolkata on April 28, 2025. The two hour event saw the participation of 375 attendees, including middle school students, educators, professionals, and conservation enthusiasts, all gathered to raise awareness about amphibian conservation.

The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, symbolizing the illumination of knowledge and collective consciousness for environmental stewardship. Following this, the introduction of esteemed guests set the tone for an inspiring day. The guests were felicitated by the Principal of The Heritage School, acknowledging their contributions to science, conservation, and education.

A special moment unfolded when the director of the documentary Little Planet – A Tale of Frogs and the school principal were honoured by the team of SAVE THE FROGS! India with uniquely designed mementoes embedded with artistic representations of frogs, signifying their commitment to amphibian conservation.

Our special guest for the day, Mr. Judhajit Dasgupta, a veteran writer renowned for his popular articles on nature, was warmly felicitated by Orchisha Deb, the youngest volunteer of SAVE THE FROGS! India. Mr. Dasgupta received a copy of Byang Byangachir Diary, a book authored by Sarbani Nag, encapsulating fascinating narratives about frogs in an engaging and accessible style.

The highlight of the event was the screening of the documentary “Little Planet – A Tale of Frogs”. This 45-minute film captivated the audience with its exploration of unique frog behaviours such as courtship rituals, amplexus (mating embrace), male-male combat, territorial defence, and remarkable instances of parental care—elements that set the documentary apart as a comprehensive portrayal of amphibian life.
Post-screening, the documentary’s director (Suhas Premkumar) engaged in an interactive session with the students, answering their curious and thoughtful questions about frog ecology and filmmaking. This was followed by an insightful interaction led by SAVE THE FROGS! Founder Dr. Kerry Kriger, who not only discussed global amphibian conservation issues but also mesmerized the audience with a soulful performance on the bansuri (bamboo flute), creating a harmonious connection between nature and art. We were also joined by Apurba Banerjee, Founder of Rahara Nibedita Art Centre, whose students have been participating in the SAVE THE FROGS! Art Contest for well over a decade.
The day’s dialogue deepened with an engaging session conducted by Sarbani Nag, President of SAVE THE FROGS! India. Her interaction spurred meaningful questions and genuine concerns about frogs among the students, inspiring a sense of responsibility towards these lesser-known creatures.
In continuation of this momentum, plans were announced for an amphibian-focused field visit and an educational project to be conducted with students during the upcoming monsoon season. This initiative aims to provide hands-on learning and citizen science opportunities, fostering a long-term connection between students and amphibian conservation efforts.
The 17th Annual Save The Frogs Day at The Heritage School, Kolkata, concluded on a hopeful note—with strengthened awareness, inspired young minds, and concrete plans for future conservation actions.
