SAVE THE FROGS! Ghana

Founded in September 2011, SAVE THE FROGS! Ghana was West Africa’s first nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to amphibian conservation, and was the first international branch of USA-based nonprofit SAVE THE FROGS!. The mission of SAVE THE FROGS! Ghana was to protect Ghana’s amphibian populations and to promote a society that respects and appreciates nature and wildlife.

In 2020, SAVE THE FROGS! Ghana re-branded as Save Ghana Frogs, and their work continues. As they state: “During our nine year history, SAVE THE FROGS! Ghana has been pivotal in amphibian research and conservation and chalked many successes which have made us iconic and giants in African amphibian conservation.”

In 2023, SAVE THE FROGS! Africa was formed to carry on the work of SAVE THE FROGS! Ghana and to spread it across the African continent.

Leading The African Amphibian Conservation Movement

Africa is fraught with both social and environmental problems, and Ghana was an excellent location from which to initiate SAVE THE FROGS! programs that spread far and wide across the African continent. Over 80% of Ghana’s original rainforests have been cleared and a third of the country’s amphibians are under threat.

With your support, SAVE THE FROGS! Ghana exponentially grew the number of Ghanaian amphibian biologists; worked to create a new national park in the biodiverse Atewa Hills, which is under threat from diamond, gold and bauxite mining; instituted programs to replace the frog meat trade and illegal logging with sustainable, environmentally-friendly sources of income; and produced educational materials that went to school throughout the country.
